Sie wurde bei den meisten Kunstrezipienten und Kritiker mehr als ‚Schmutz’ und ‚sinnloses Revoluzzertum’ abgetan, denn als Kunst wahrgenommen. Der Dadaismus ist in dieser Epoche die Spitze der modernen Kunstbewegung, die mit der Décadence über den italienischen Futurismus und den Expressionismus schon seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Fuß gefasst hatte 2.

Was früher als sinnlos und Nicht-Kunst abgehandelt wurde, stellt sich von heutigen Standpunkten als sehr interessant dar. Die Auswirkungen des Dadaismus sind mannigfaltig, bis heute werden die Konzepte der damaligen Zeit aufgenommen, sei es durch Drip-Paintings von Jackson Pollock, Cut-Ups von William S. Borroughs3 oder die Collagen von David Carson4. Nimmt guy Werke des Dadaismus wie Duchamps Ready-mades, die nur durch das Ausstellen in Museen zur Kunst avancierten, wird klar, wie der Kuns tbegriff auf ein theoretisches Niveau übertragen wurde.
